Machame Route |
The Lemosho Route is the longest of the major routes for climbing Kilimanjaro, and it’s the most expensive as well due to the extra day and the remoteness of the trailhead. The other major distinction between Lemosho and the others is this is the only route where climbers need to spend the first day with an armed ranger due to the abundant wildlife in the area. The climb itself can take either 7 or 8 days, with 8 days being recommended so climbers have more time to acclimate before the brutal summit day. This route is not nearly as popular as Machame or Maragnu, but it’s a good one to consider because the longer climbing time equals a greater chance of reaching the summit with fewer problems. The scenery might be the best of all the routes, and in addition you’ll see the abundant wildlife on the first day, including elephants, buffalos, and other game animals.
It takes about 3 hours to drive from Moshi to the official trailhead. This is the normal 8-day itinerary, with a note about the 7-day version below:

Lemosho route |
The Machame Route is definitely the most popular among climbers using experienced guides. It is always done in either 6 or 7 days, and the 7-day version is recommended for everyone because the extra day to acclimatize will increase your chances of making the summit and enjoying it in the process.
Unlike the infamous Marangu Route (but similar to all the others), the Machame Route involves sleeping in tents each night with no snack bars along the way to spoil the vibe. It’s obviously longer than Marangu, but also much more scenic and interesting. Another advantage to Machame is that climbers make a relatively quick rise to elevation in the first few days, which makes acclimatization easier and gentler, and helps greatly preparing for the brutal summit day. In almost all cases groups will actually descend on the separate Mweka Route, which is quicker and offers different scenery during the day and a half on the way down.
